Benedict Cumberbatch is set to return as Doctor Strange in the highly anticipated “Avengers 5,” with filming scheduled to commence next year.

The acclaimed actor, known for his dynamic roles, revealed this exciting news during an interview about his upcoming Netflix series, “Eric.” Cumberbatch shared that he is gearing up to portray the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) superhero once more. โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to Avengers next year; thereโ€™s a massive storm brewing,โ€ he hinted, suggesting that production will kick off in early 2025.

Initially, Cumberbatch faced scheduling conflicts that almost prevented him from reprising his role. However, persistent efforts from Marvel convinced him to return as the iconic sorcerer. Reflecting on this, he remarked, โ€œPlaying Doctor Strange is immensely enjoyable. It also provides me with opportunities to create stories and give writers a platform. Itโ€™s been a gift in my life, both as an actor and a producer.โ€

When Will “Avengers 5” Be Released?

The initial release date for “Avengers 5” was set for May 2, 2025. However, recent developments within Marvel have led to significant changes. Following the departure of Jonathan Majors, the film’s title and concept have undergone revisions, moving away from the originally planned “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.”

Changes continue behind the scenes, with director Destin Daniel Cretton exiting the project in November 2023. Although a new director has yet to be announced, speculation is rife that Shawn Levy, currently directing “Deadpool & Wolverine,” might take the helm. Additionally, Michael Waldron has joined the project as a screenwriter.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has tempered expectations regarding the return of the original Avengers cast. In a previous interview, he stated,

โ€œWeโ€™re working on a project with Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Downey Jr. remains part of our family, but weโ€™ll see if they return.โ€

Anticipation and Expectations for “Avengers 5”

If there are no further delays, “Avengers 5” is slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2026. Fans are eagerly speculating about the upcoming film’s potential to match the success of “Infinity War” and “Endgame.” With Cumberbatch back as Doctor Strange and new creative forces behind the scenes, the next Avengers installment promises to deliver another epic chapter in the MCU saga.
