In anticipation of one of the most awaited releases of 2024, “Deadpool 3,” director Shawn Levy shared his thoughts on which Marvel films viewers should watch before diving into the upcoming movie.
“Deadpool 3” brings Deadpool into the Marvel universe, alongside mutants. Since its initial announcement, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been generating immense anticipation, thanks to its promise of revisiting timeline events differently, Hugh Jackman reprising his iconic role, and introducing mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
From the first announcement video featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, fans have speculated extensively about where the film fits within Marvel’s expansive cosmos. Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, rumors swirled about how copyrighted mutant characters would integrate into the film. Consequently, various lists recommending X-Men and Marvel films to watch before heading to theaters began circulating online. However, the latest input on this matter comes from the film’s director, Shawn Levy.
“I was a good student in school. I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies,” Levy recently told the Associated Press.
“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” Film Won’t Be “Deadpool 3”
While the third installment of the Deadpool series will reintroduce Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, this iteration of Wolverine won’t be the same character seen before. In the tenth X-Men film, 2017’s “Logan,” directed by James Mangold, James Howlett met his demise. The Wolverine featured in this film will be Logan living in a world on the brink of extinction in an alternative universe.
Reynolds and Levy also highlight that fans have misunderstood the third Deadpool film. They clarify in interviews that while “Deadpool & Wolverine” is Deadpool’s third film, it’s not “Deadpool 3.”
Release Date
“Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters on July 26, 2024. With the screenplay crafted by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Ryan Reynolds, and Shawn Levy, the film stands out as a highly anticipated project among Marvel fans. It holds the distinction of being the only Marvel Cinematic Universe film released in 2024.
