Exploring the Ken Spin-Off Potential: Director Greta Gerwig Weighs In
In a season dominated by “Barbie,” director Greta Gerwig, who made waves in the summer, has hinted at the possibility of a spin-off centered around Ken.
Behind the widely talked-about Barbie movie featuring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, director Greta Gerwig dropped hints about a potential spin-off focused on Ken. With a stellar cast including Ncuti Gatwa, Dua Lipa, and Ryan Gosling, the film garnered immense success. However, during a 60 Minutes interview, when asked about the possibility of an independent Ken film, Gerwig intriguingly replied:
“Well, you know… I guess we’ll see.”
Gerwig delved deeper into the interview, hinting at more Ken-centric content that hasn’t made it to the final cut. Hinting at an untold treasure trove of stories that could potentially emerge in a spin-off, she stated, “We had a lot of material for Ken. We’d write and write and write.”
Contrary to Gerwig’s thoughts, Margot Robbie had previously spoken negatively about a sequel to the film, emphasizing its standalone nature by stating:
“I think we put everything into this film. We didn’t do this to make it a trilogy or something else.”
Barbie Ken Movie: A Possible Barbie Spin-Off Film on the Horizon
If the Ken film comes to fruition, Ryan Gosling is ready to reprise his role once more. Gosling, who portrays the character in the film, hinted at the potential future of Barbieland with a cryptic viewpoint. She expressed uncertainty with the words:
“I won’t even touch on that. We really don’t know anything.”
However, she amusingly expressed interest in reprising Ken if the opportunity arises.
Additionally, Greta Gerwig confessed that Ryan Gosling was always in her mind for the role during the casting process.
“We wrote his name into the script and everything… and [Gosling’s name] was everywhere. When we handed the script to them, the studio said, ‘It’s great that you know Ryan.’ I said, ‘I don’t know Ryan. I’ve never met Ryan, I have no idea,'” she said.
