Warner Bros. has unveiled exciting news for fans of Middle-earth with the announcement of a new “Lord of the Rings” production, “The Hunt for Gollum.”
Set to be released under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella, this latest installment in the beloved fantasy franchise brings aboard the legendary Peter Jackson as producer, while the directorial reins are handed over to none other than Andy Serkis.
The enduringly popular fantasy world created by J.R.R. Tolkien continues to expand its cinematic and television footprint. While Prime Video delves into untold stories of Middle-earth with its upcoming season of “The Rings of Power,” New Line Cinema, the studio behind the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, is determined to further enrich the realm on the big screen.
For some time now, Warner Bros. Discovery has been known to be exploring new projects within the “Lord of the Rings” universe. Alongside the anticipated anime feature “The War of the Rohirrim,” slated for release in 2024, the studio has also been eyeing other live-action ventures.
After several years, the first live-action project under development by New Line Cinema has emerged.
New “Lord of the Rings” Film “The Hunt for Gollum” on the Horizon Warner Bros. is gearing up to release a new film in 2026 focusing on the character of Gollum, previously brought to life on screen by Andy Serkis.
During an investor meeting today, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav unveiled the new LotR project, which will see Peter Jackson teaming up with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens as producers. Zaslav also indicated that Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens will be deeply involved in every stage of the project, with the screenplay currently in its initial development phase, promising to “explore untold stories.”
In addition, WBD’s president added:
“We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming aboard to direct ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ cinematic history.”
The trio of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens previously served as screenwriters and producers on the original trilogy.
Warner Bros. first announced its plans to produce “multiple” films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works back in February 2023, under the leadership of studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy.
These projects will be developed through New Line Cinema, the production company responsible for the previous LotR films.
Details about the new “The Hunt for Gollum” film, with Andy Serkis stepping into the director’s chair, are currently limited.
Gollum Game Fell Short Meanwhile, Daedalic Entertainment attempted to develop a game centered around Gollum in 2023, but the production faced such critical failure that the studio ultimately closed its doors. The game received a dismal score of 33/100 on Metacritic.
