Letterboxd is gearing up to broaden its scope. The popular social networking site is set to expand its library to include TV series later this year.

After selling the majority stake to a Canadian investment company, Letterboxd made its first expansion move.

TV Series Joining the Film Focused Platform

The film-themed social networking site will be adding TV series to its platform by the end of 2024.

Founded in 2011 by Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow, the New Zealand-based social networking site, Letterboxd, has succeeded in standing out among film-focused databases and rating platforms with around 10 million users.

Offering users the ability to log watched films, comment and rate movies, and create personal film lists, Letterboxd sold the majority stake to the Canadian investment firm Tiny for $50 million in October 2023.

Letterboxd aimed to be a meeting point in its current setup, allowing users to connect with cinephiles worldwide. Film critics and cinema enthusiasts shared their instant opinions on various films from around the world on the platform, and user-created film lists garnered significant attention on social media.

Transitioning to TV: A Strategic Move

According to Variety, Buchanan and Randow preferred to sell the majority stake to a Canadian investment firm, Tiny.

Now, as part of its changes in 2024, Letterboxd is preparing to focus on TV series and how it can expand this market. Buchanan mentioned that this has been a topic they’ve been working on for a while, noting that TV productions have been “on the agenda for a few years.”

The initiative to expand into TV series is set to kick off towards the end of this year. However, it’s not yet clear whether television productions will have their separate website and/or application or be directly integrated into the platform.

Some Letterboxd users have been sharing criticisms suggesting that adding TV series to the platform could fundamentally change the site’s purpose.

However, Buchanan disagrees with this view. Entrepreneurially stating:

The main pushback around the idea of adding TV is that our community is perhaps scared that the film-logging may be overrun by people binge-watching ‘Friends’.

He further defends that their priority is to introduce new ventures without compromising the experience of existing users.
