In a recent interview, Ian McShane, who portrays Winston, the leader of the Continental hotel, sheds light on how the action film “Ballerina” seamlessly fits into the “John Wick” saga.
John Wick 5 Confirmation:
Last March, Keanu Reeves returned to ruthlessly take down villains in John Wick: Chapter 4. While the director hinted at ideas for five more films in October, Reeves expressed exhaustion with the fourth installment. The 59-year-old actor even requested the writers to kill off his character after John Wick 4.
As of now, it’s unclear whether a fifth installment will materialize. However, the spin-off “Ballerina,” featuring Ana de Armas (No Time to Die, Ghosted), is set to hit screens soon.
Film Details:
Directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld), the action film explores a branch of the mythology introduced in the third installment of the franchise.
“Ballerina” will see the return of familiar characters, including Winston, played by Ian McShane, Charon, the Continental concierge portrayed by the late Lance Reddick, the Director of the New York branch of the Ruska Roma played by Anjelica Huston, and John Wick (Reeves). Notably, Reeves trained alongside the film’s heroine, Ana de Armas, who was impressed by his professionalism.
Ballerina’s Timeline Placement:
Until now, the timeline placement of “Ballerina” was unknown. Ian McShane clarified to Collider that the spin-off’s events occur between John Wick 3 and 4.
“This film is set between John Wick 3 and John Wick 4 because Keanu is in it too. We didn’t want to place it after John Wick 4 because then social media would start saying, ‘Oh, he’s still alive! What’s he going to do next? Is there a John Wick 5?’ This way, we can still claim there won’t be a John Wick 5.”
This statement seemingly confirms the imminent development of a fifth film in the main saga. With Chad Stahelski occupied with the Highlander reboot, he might direct John Wick 5 or pass the baton to someone else.
Plot Insights:
The official synopsis of “Ballerina” states that the film follows “a young woman raised as an assassin on a quest to avenge her family’s killers.” McShane provides more insight into the plot, saying, “This time, we’re protecting Ana de Armas, and Lance Reddick, my dear friend who passed away last year, was able to shoot the film. Lance and I are offering our usual protection to the character played by Ana de Armas.”
The British actor adds, “Working with Len Wiseman was a pleasure. We collaborated on the script beforehand, so there was no wasted time. Len consulted with Chad [Stahelski], and I believe there’s continuity with the other films in the John Wick saga. It should be very enjoyable. Working with Ana and Gabriel Byrne, who portrays the main antagonist, was a delightful experience.”
Cast and Release Date:
Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus also join the cast of the film scheduled for release in the United States on June 7, 2024.
