Aaron Sorkin Teases Next Project as a ‘Quasi Sequel’ to ‘The Social Network’

Aaron Sorkin stands in front of the words 'The Social Network,' a film he wrote and was filmed.

In a recent revelation on the podcast “The Town with Matthew Belloni“, renowned screenwriter and director Aaron Sorkin unveiled plans for his next film, centered around the storming of the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Sorkin intriguingly described this upcoming venture as a “quasi sequel” to his previous masterpiece, ‘The Social Network’, citing its connection to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta and co-creator of Facebook.

During the podcast discussion, Sorkin boldly attributed much of the blame for the Capitol insurrection to Facebook, although he tantalizingly withheld specific details, teasing listeners with the promise of revelations to come.

“I blame Facebook for January 6th,” remarked Sorkin, before playfully adding, “You’ll have to buy a movie ticket to find out why.”

Expanding on his stance, Sorkin delved into Facebook’s role in exacerbating societal divisions, pointing to the platform’s algorithmic promotion of divisive content as a significant contributing factor. He squarely placed responsibility on Zuckerberg, emphasizing the platform’s prioritization of engagement over ethical considerations.

“Facebook has, among other things, fine-tuned its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible,” noted Sorkin. “Because that’s what drives engagement, and that’s what keeps you on what they call within the halls of Facebook, the endless scroll.”

He further critiqued Facebook’s lack of balance between growth and integrity, highlighting Zuckerberg’s apparent prioritization of financial gain over ethical responsibility.

“There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity, but there isn’t. It’s just growth,” lamented Sorkin. “So if Mark Zuckerberg wakes up tomorrow and realizes that there’s nothing worth $120 billion that can’t be bought for $119 billion, then why not make a little less money? I’ll dial back on integrity and throttle growth.”

Sorkin’s upcoming project promises to explore these themes within the context of the Capitol insurrection, offering audiences a compelling narrative that builds upon the societal impact examined in ‘The Social Network’. With his signature blend of incisive dialogue and intricate storytelling, Sorkin’s film is poised to spark vital conversations about the intersection of technology, power, and responsibility in today’s digital age.
